This report presents results from work over a period from June 1962 through March 1965. Results from studies by other workers are included to maintain the continuity of reference information. The report is concerned primarily with the portion of the Jackson Hole Elk Herd that winters on lands within and adjacent to Grand Teton National Park and on the National Elk Refuge.

Yellowstone National Park is a spectacular place in winter. Sub-zero temperatures clash with steam from the park's numerous hot springs and geysers to create frosted ghost trees and a winter wonderland. The thermally-warmed open rivers and bare ground shelter wildlife in the hostile winter environment.
